Chapter Twenty-Three

Healing Crisis

Hailey moves into my mom’s house and apprentices every hour she can to finish her course. I barely see her. She works and sleeps, and I wonder how long it’s been since she felt safe enough to really sleep.

While she works at her apprenticeship, I spend the time rising early and writing a thousand words before the world wakes. I don’t know what I’m doing, and I don’t let that dampen my enthusiasm. The more I write, the more scenes appear in my head. I’m delighted as the word count builds on the left hand of my computer screen.

When Hailey finishes her apprenticeship, it feels natural and right that Ford and I stand together to say goodbye to her as she leaves for witness protection. I have a bad feeling about it.

As I press my hand to my heart, watching the police drive off with her, Ford slides his arm around me. “She’s going to be okay.”

“She’s so young.” My heart breaks for her.

“So were you.”

“I didn’t have the same challenges. I’m worried.”

Ford tightens his arm around my shoulders. “I told her when she accepted protection—she can always come to us.”

I nod my approval. “No matter what.”

“Always.”

My life revolves around the clinic, but I’m finding a healthy balance between writing, walking, and working. I notice that when I walk my five K in the early morning, I often run into Ford on the trail. I start to think that this isn’t a coincidence. He and I bump into each other often now.

Every afternoon I dedicate to my P. Volve exercise and meal planning, as well as attending meetings to decide about the clinic.

I love Friday night cooking class. Ford and I walk together to the kitchen to meet up with our friends. At other times, we handle legal issues surrounding the Salt and Citrus clinic like a well-oiled machine. Sometimes, I notice him looking at me at the same time I look at him. I like it.
